How to create your own concept as an ambient artist ?

Hello “Ø of Ambient” readers, today we are talking about a new interesting topic: how to create your style. 

As an ambient artist it becomes sometimes maddening finding your own style in this music industry full of “copycats” and create content following a strict concept. 

You listen/watch other artists and realise you have nothing very clear, so you seek new ambient sub-genres to follow: dark ambient, dreamcore, grey ambient ect… 

After a certain time you realise you are not making any progress and switch to a new vibe, forcing you to restart all over. 

In this article I will give you three steps to create your style and make your music shine with it, analysing an artist that we previously interviewed: dxstroyed.

1. Pick your CLFPO

Usually artists with very clear concepts follow the CLFPO pattern. It literally means: colour, light, filter, place and object. Dxstroyed is no different, they use blue/greeb colours, soft lights, grain filter, lonely places and blurry faces, flowers, symbolical objects. Here you have the basic structure! Now you are ready for the cover arts and content. 

2. Pick your sound 

Ok, we are done with visuals, now what about music? Here it becomes complex, not everybody has the gut to find THE SOUND. First thing, define your preferences and what ambient you want to create. Secondly, through FL Studio, Garage Band or Bandlab, simply search for an original sound that suits you. Try to use it almost in all of your tracks, so the listener will immediately recognise you. 

Returning to dxstroyed they constantly use eerie serums, deep basses and never rhythms, creating rather an atmosphere than a memorable track. 

3. Promote your style. 

When you have everything set, you just need to let the world discover your style, promote it, give it a name!! Also create a playlist and add artists that have similar vibes as you. Remember to stay loyal to your concept as much as possible!
